Pair of circa 1820 George III Hepplewhite Style Oval Side Tables

About the Item

This style of neoclassical furniture was created by London designer and cabinetmaker, George Hepplewhite. Hepplewhite was regarded as one of the "big three" English furniture makers in the 18th century. While little is known about his life, his work has spoken volumes as he was an incredibly influential furniture maker during his time. One of the hallmarks of his style was his subtle, yet striking use of intricate inlays. This pair of delicate and dainty side tables are veneered and inlaid with a combination of European woods of sycamore, tulipwood, and birch. Sycamore is a high-quality wood that is visually appealing. It has a lustrous and silky look with a subtle sheen and smoothness that makes it an attractive choice for wood carving. The tulipwood has a finer texture and is resistant to insect attack. Birch, at the time, was a plentiful local choice. The top surface of these tables has a sweet inlay design of an oval fan. The geometry and symmetry of this motif became a favorite decoration for furniture pieces of this style. A raised border encircles the top and has a lovely striped pattern that matches the straight and tapered legs. The apron has a complimentary half-fan motif as well as a braid-like border. An x-stretcher connects the four legs, curving upwards, in the middle, coming together towards a decorative urn finial, on top. Everything about these tables has been meticulously crafted. The ornate detailing and use of exotic woods have made these exquisite tables treasured works of art. Being individually handmade, the tables have variations and are not identical. One of the tables has a book-match veneer with more veining than the other (see images). They are, however, exquisitely made and in good condition for their age. The legs are slender. Due to their fragile nature, they are decorative, and not able to hold heavy items. Wear consistent with age and use. Segments of the veneered inlay creating the raised border trim encircling the tops are missing or show wear, but not loose. Delicate and lightweight, we suggest they are handled with care. They are intact but not meant to hold heavy items.

George III Period Satinwood Pembroke Table

A late 18th century satinwood Pembroke table of very good rich color. George III period. The top crossbanded in satinwood, bordered with fine lozenges of ebony stringing. The edges ebonized with narrow mahogany crossbandings. Raised on moulded tapering legs, indicative of a date circa 1770. The frieze with two working mahogany-lined short drawers retaining the original gilt-brass Rococo mounts. The two leaves are supported on the original recessed hinged ‘ear’ supports. Overall in lovely original state. Some minor historic marks entirely commensurate with its age. Very good patination. These antique Pembroke tables were designed to be versatile: as small supper tables; occasional tables; tea tables; or lamp tables - sometimes also referred to as ‘drop leaf’ or ‘sofa’ tables. The majority of these Georgian tables are raised on square tapering legs or, when of a later date, on turned legs. It is more unusual for a satinwood Pembroke table to be raised on moulded tapering legs. Interestingly, Thomas Sheraton (1751-1806) mentions the Pembroke table as follows: “a type of breakfast table from the name of the lady who first gave orders for one of them”, possibly referring to the Countess of Pembroke, of Wilton House, Salisbury, (1737-1831). This is an elegant hand-crafted mahogany George III multifunctionality corner table. During this time, corner tables became popular, due to their multi-functional and space-saving characteristics. They easily transform into a square multi-use: tea table, card table, reading table, tea table, etc. Completely utilitarian and space-optimizing, it could be placed in any room and provide many uses.
