Pair of William and Mary Side Tables with Carrara Marble Tops

About the Item

An Extremely Rare Pair of William and Mary Side Tables, with original Carrara Marble Tops Carefully stripped to reveal the scintilla remnants of the original black japanned surface; a rare surviving photograph from 1910 captures one of the tables in situ at Glemham Hall, showing an original black surface, with legs picked out in either a gilded surface or pale paint (sitting handsomly beneath two John Vanderbank tapestries which date from circa 1700) – adding a sense of graceful strength to this evocative Chinoiserie decoration at Glemham. The tables are handsomely carved, raised on an arcaded frieze with acorn drop finials, with octagonal baluster feet united by shaped stretchers, on bun feet. With original Carrara marble tops. Provenance: Reputedly with Dudley North (1641-1691) for his London House Until sold with Glemham Hall in 1923 to Captain John Murray Cobbold (1897-1944), and thence by descent. 17th Century Italian Carved Polychrome Table, with Breccia Capitolina Marble Top
Located in London, GB
Carved to exceptional naturalistic effect, the base of the present console table takes the shape of a pear tree entwined with vines, its roots firmly planted in a grassy knoll, lush with vegetation. With shaped Breccia Capitolina marble top. The fashion for such tables had been initiated in seventeenth-century Italy by the preeminent artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680), who – whilst primarily celebrated as a sculptor – was also active as a painter and as a furniture designer. As observed by scholar Alvar González-Palacios, it is amply recorded that “Bernini took punctilious care with the supports of his statues”, including for the pedestal of his renowned Apollo and Daphne in Rome’s Villa Borghese. In about 1617, Bernini carved a Carrara marble figure of the martyred Saint Lawrence that is considered by many a masterpiece of his early career, visible today in Florence’s Palazzo...
