Rare Important Cobra and Situationist Group Artist Constant Custom Table

About the Item

Super rare and important custom "IJHORST" table with special artisan made glass top designed by important COBRA group artist and visionary Situationist group founding member, artist and architect Constant van Niewenhuys (1920-2005), (Dutch spelling Nieuwenhuijs) abbreviated to Constant. The IJhorst tables were designed in 1953 and only produced during the brief period 1957-8 by the company t Spectrum in the Netherlands and are extremely rare. This artisan made glass top version is a super rare opportunity for collectors of design art as it is made between 1953 and the time of production in 1957-1958. Constant was one of the most important and influential of the postwar Dutch artists and was a founding member of both the important postwar artists group COBRA (Karel Appel, Asger Jorn, Lucebert et al) and the radical SITUATIONIST INTERNATIONAL movement in Paris under the leadership of Guy Debord. He also provided the spatial colorization (color schemes) for several of Gerrit Rietveld’s architectural projects. Constant's paintings can be found in museum collections throughout the world including the collections of the Tate gallery, London, the Musee National d’art Moderne Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris and the Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin. A biography file including a very interesting interview with Constant where he also comments on his working relationship with Gerrit Rietveld can be supplied to clients who are interested in discovering more about this important artist.
