Restored Antique Gillows Cuban Hardwood Dumb Waiter Metamorphic Occasional Table
About the Item
We are delighted to offer for sale this stunning circa 1840-1860 Gillows of Lancaster Attributed, Cuban Mahogany fully restored dumb waiting occasional table
A very good looking well made and decorative piece with a glorious timber patina. This is a metamorphic dumb waiter, the idea being it sits as a normal occasional table with one level and then when your butler appears with snacks in your study he opens the table up to reveal the three levels
This piece has been fully restored, the mechanism had seized shut and no longer worked, my chaps have taken it apart and we able to keep the bottom shelf open, the top one functions as it should
The timber is Cuban mahogany, it has an absolutely stunning patina and grain, it really glows in the right light
My restored has as mentioned taken it apart, fixed any issues he could, replaced and missing pieces of timber, then washed it all back and French polished it, its now ready to go

Period George III Mahogany Two-Tiered Dumb Waiter
Located in Hudson, NY
This piece made in England, circa 1770 is of an unusual size and with the added feature of folding drop leaves. Made from solid mahogany without veneers the piece is heavy and mannish with a deep rich color to the wood. The table is accented with fine detailed carved line bands along the edge of the drop leaves and well shaped turned balusters for uprights and nice simple feet on pads. While described by Sheraton in his essay of 1803 as" a useful piece of furniture to serve in some respects the place of a waiter, whence it is named" the type of furniture was used from the 1720s on as a place to put plates...
