About the Item

A Robert Thompson “Mouseman” (1876-1955) Unusual Oak Wine Table. Adzed top above a ring turned column on a triform base. Carved mouse. English Circa 1930. 31cms diam x 60cms high Prov; Lingholm, Cumbria. The Mouseman table was commissioned from Robert Thompson to pair up with the 18th century version. Occupying a position high on the banks of Derwentwater in Cumbria, Lingholm was designed in the 1870’s by Sir Alfred Waterhouse (1830-1905), one of the most acclaimed architects Occupying a position high on the banks of Derwentwater in Cumbria, Lingholm was of the 19th century. The property was originally built for Colonel J. F. Greenall of the Greenall brewing family, however during the 1890′s it was unoccupied or let furnished in the summer months, and in the early 1900’s it was purchased by Colonel George Kemp. Kemp was born in Rochdale, Lancashire in 1866 and was educated at Shrewsbury School and Balliol College, Oxford. He transferred to Trinity College, Cambridge in 1884, where he graduated in the ‘Classical Tripos’ in 1888. As a businessman, Kemp entered the textile industry, eventually becoming Chairman of Kelsall & Kemp, flannel manufacturers in Rochdale. From 1885 to 1892 he played first-class cricket with Lancashire, scoring three centuries in his career, and also representing Cambridge University. He was elected Member of Parliament for Heywood as a Liberal Unionist in 1895 and, in 1900, he served in the Boer War, during which service he was mentioned in despatches. He commanded the 32nd Battalion of the Imperial Yeomanry to the end of the war in 1902, and in 1909 he was knighted for his war services. At the January 1910 General Election he was elected MP for Manchester North West, this time as a Liberal, but stepped down from the House of Commons in 1912, declaring that he "loathed politics". A year later, he was raised to the peerage as Baron Rochdale of Rochdale. Called to war again a few years later, Lord Rochdale was Lieutenant Colonel in command of the 1st/6th Battalions of the Lancashire Fusiliers, and was temporarily Brigadier of the 127th (Manchester) Brigade of the 42nd (East Lancashire) Division during the Battle of Gallipoli in 1915. Rochdale married Lady Beatrice Mary Egerton, third daughter of Francis Egerton, 3rd Earl of Ellesmere on 5 August 1896. Ellesmere had inherited the estates and famous collections at Worsley Hall in Lancaster and Bridgewater House in London, and these wonderful collections may have encouraged Rochdale to begin his own collections, which he did in earnest, in the tradition of other wealthy industrialists of his time, such as Sir William Burrell. As so often happens, his collecting was carried out in partnership with a scholarly dealer. Rochdale’s dealer and mentor was the famous authority on furniture and works of art, Percy Macquoid. Macquoid (1852–1925) was a theatrical designer, collector and connoisseur of English furniture, and the author of articles, largely for Country Life. He produced four books on the history of English furniture, the first major survey of the subject, which have been reprinted and are still of use today: The Age of Oak, The Age of Walnut, The Age of Mahogany and The Age of Satinwood. He collaborated with Ralph Edwards on The Dictionary of English Furniture (three volumes, 1924–1927), and several pieces in the present collection are illustrated in this celebrated reference work. Lord Rochdale was eventually to own four houses. Apart from Lingholm, his other homes were Beechwood in Rochdale, Old Hall in Highgate, (Lord Arundel’s old house) and Gunnerside in Swaledale. Slowly these houses began to fill with early furniture and works of art, purchased from mainly London galleries and authorities of the day, including Harold Ainsworth Peto, Sir George Donaldson, Morant & Co, Mallett & Son and, of course, Macquoid himself. All these purchases were recorded in a marvellous inventory in the possession of the current Viscount, recording dates of purchase and from whom. The inventory records furniture and works of art from the 16th and 17th centuries; oak and walnut furniture from England, France and Italy; Flemish and Italian tapestries and textiles; the celebrated collection of maiolica, some sold in London in the 1970’s, and at Lyon & Turnbull more recently, and the remainder in the present collection. There is also rare 17th century English silver and silver-gilt and a magnificent collection of engraved glassware. Where it has been possible to identify a piece in this inventory, the information is annotated next the appropriate lot. When Lingholm was purchased, panelling was introduced into the main rooms. The dining room was fitted with a particularly spectacular carved oak fire surround, salvaged from James I’s Hunting Lodge near Southampton. In the hall, Spanish gilt-leather walls created a sumptuous and rich effect, a fitting backdrop to the Renaissance period furniture and works of art. To the side of the building, the great Stone Hall was created to show off the tapestries, again bought under the guidance of Percy Macquoid and included in the sale. The panelled walls with local slate above the door level are centred on a magnificent Italian Renaissance fireplace, purchased in Florence from Giuseppe Pacini Florence on March 20th 1903. The bay window allowed spectacular views towards the lake, taking in part of the famously planted gardens with its collection of rhododendrons. This collection of rhododendrons and azaleas, many planted in the 1920’s and 1930’s are one of Lingholm’s chief glories. On acquiring the estate, Lord Rochdale created terraces and commissioned Bertram Symons-Jeune to lay out the water gardens. The woods around Lingholm were – and still are – the home of red squirrels and other woodland creatures. These creatures captured the imagination of one of Lingholm’s most famous visitors, the children’s writer and illustrator, Beatrix Potter. The house was the favourite summer retreat for Potter and her family and in 1901, whilst staying there, she sent a story and picture letter about a red squirrel colony in Cumberland to Norah Moore, the daughter of her former governess, Annie Moore. “There are such numbers of squirrels in the woods here,” she wrote in the letter, “They are all very busy now gathering nuts which they hide away in little holes where they can find them again in winter.” Her correspondence was illustrated with sketches of squirrels, one of which she called ‘Nutkin’. She spent the summer sketching these squirrels, the landscape around the house, and St Herbert's Island in the centre of the lake, which would eventually become Owl Island in Squirrel Nutkin. Potter sketched and photographed the island from both sides of the lake from the shores at Lingholm. The island and its surroundings can be accurately identified from Potter's illustrations, one shown here from lot XXX. Potter also drew inspiration here for The Tale of Peter Rabbit which uses Lingholm for scenes in the vegetable garden, with its distinctive wicket gate. To the end of his life, Lord Rochdale kept collecting: a familiar figure between the wars in the sale rooms. The collection grew steadily, however eventually it all came to Lingholm after Beechwood was demolished; Gunnerside sold, and Highgate Old Hall was destroyed after the war. The house was used as a hospital for injured service personnel during World War One; however it continued to remain in the family. Lord Rochdale died in 1945 and was succeeded by his eldest son, John, who became the first Viscount Rochdale in 1960. He was succeeded by the current Viscount, St John Durival Kemp. Lord Rochdale and his wife, Lady Rochdale, hope that the excitement and pleasure that were engendered in collecting and acquiring these pieces will, in turn, be enjoyed by new collectors at this sale.
