A stunning Biedermeier period burl walnut side table from Vienna, Austria c. 1830. Please take a moment to look at this superb example of cabinet making from the early nineteenth century with an amazing level of detailed workmanship. Every flat surface on this table has been covered in a striking display of the beautiful grain known as "burl" walnut. The burl is the result of a rare growth on a walnut tree that produces a particular random pattern in the line of the grain that is striking in its intensity. The top of this table features four panels of burl walnut that all match and are placed so the four sections mirror and echo the sensuous movement of the grain. The artisan continued choosing only the best quality of walnut with the most dramatic grain as the edge of the top as well as the apron is also surfaced with burl walnut. The pattern created by this placement even resembles the folds of drapery panels seen in sculpture from the ancient classical civilizations of Greece and Rome. This allusion to the past would have been readily understood by the educated patrons who acquired this elegant furniture. The base of the table also exhibits the same emphasis on showcasing the grain of the timber both on the flat section as well as the sides as the contrast between the light and the dark that creates the distinctive grain is especially apparent. In a continuation of the reference to the classical past the two vertical supports have each been carved from a single piece of highly grained walnut in the shape of a lyre. This was necessary because this table did not remain in a stationary position in the room where it was placed. During this period many smaller pieces of furniture as well as chairs for seating were expected to be moved around a room depending upon who was using them and what time of day and year it was. If more light or warmth was needed the table could be moved closer to the fireplace or over to a window when the weather was warmer and a cool breeze was desired. So durability as well as elegance was crucial when creating pieces for an interior. The drawer in the front retains its original iron lock and when pulled forward reveals the original divided interior. Oftentimes writing supplies or small needlework projects were kept inside of these tables and the ability to lock the drawer meant valuables were protected from servants who might be tempted to steal.
