Unique Glow in the Dark Wood and Gold leaf Japanese Salon Table by David Ray
About the Item
This table was made in 1990 in Amsterdam and has been totally restored this year, 2023.
From the private collection of David Ray, a unique salon table a triptych by Hokusai commemorating a famous event in Japanese history. It is a reproduction of a Hokusai painting.
Returning victorious from a sea battle, the Japanese navy was caught in a great storm. In the fierce winds the Admiral’s ship was separated from the fleet and blown ever closer to the rocks. In an attempt to prevent a disaster, the Admiral’s faithful servant hurled himself into the sea as a sacrifice.
Distraught by the loss of his friend, the Admiral launched a boat in an attempt to save him, but the sea had already taken his life.
At that moment the wind shifted and the ship was blown back out to sea and all were saved.
The table is finished in black lacquer with an egg shell finish. With bronze coated steel feet. Japanese ideograms finished in gold leaf adorn each side. Each depicting a symbol of good luck.
The table measures 174 cms x 88 cms x 37 cms.
An added aspect of it’s uniqueness is that it glows in the dark.
