About the Item
This rare Model 535 "Mosquito" coffee table was designed by renowned Dutch designer Wim Rietveld in the early 1950s and produced by Gispen. A standout example of postwar Dutch industrial design, the table is celebrated for its light, angular construction and minimalist elegance—hallmarks of Rietveld’s approach to functional modernism.
The table features curved, splayed legs in gray enameled steel, a design that gives the piece its nickname “Mosquito” due to its resemblance to the poised legs of an insect. A clear glass top rests above a wooden tray, which sits (unattached) on the metal support structure beneath. While the tray is not original to the piece, it was crafted according to original specifications, providing an authentic visual reference and utility.
This particular version has a lower profile than the standard height of traditional Mosquito tables, making it especially well-suited as a coffee or cocktail table. The form is deceptively simple yet ingeniously engineered—embodying the postwar ethos of material efficiency, modularity, and refined utility.
In vintage condition, with wear and patina consistent with age and use, including minor surface marks to the frame and tray. A rare and collectible piece that pairs well with other works by Rietveld or Friso Kramer. Other 'Mosquito' tables available, listed separately (Please inquire).
