About the Item
This is an antique Japanese low table with a separate base structure. It was used as a work table in a farmhouse during the Meiji period (1860s–1900s), and it still retains its rustic and powerful presence. The fact that it has survived in usable condition after so many decades is remarkable, and the piece carries with it the atmosphere of the countryside barn where it was discovered.
The construction is astonishingly simple: a single solid wood top placed on two circular bases. There are no decorative elements whatsoever, allowing the natural beauty of the materials to stand out in its purest form. The tabletop is a precious single plank of horse chestnut (tochi), valued for its substantial thickness and rich, expressive grain. It shows almost no warping, and the long years of use have given it a beautifully textured surface. Subtle undulations, naturally formed cracks, and variations in tone create a truly one-of-a-kind landscape.
The two bases, on the other hand, are made of zelkova (keyaki). In addition to the characteristic strength of keyaki, there are traces of old wormholes in places, all of which are part of the aged character of the wood. There are no active insects now, so it can be used with confidence. The rough texture of the old keyaki contrasts beautifully with the smooth surface of the tochi top.
Because of the separate structure, there may be slight wobbling depending on the placement of the bases. However, this can be easily adjusted by inserting small wooden shims between the tabletop and the bases.
It can be used in many ways: as a low sofa table for a grounded, luxurious look; as a side table; as a gallery display stand; or as a base for sculptures or large vases. It complements both Japanese and Western interiors, bringing a quiet tension and presence to any space. This piece captures the raw power of natural materials and the beauty shaped by the passage of time—an expression of the Japanese spirit of wabi-sabi.
Weight: tabletop 25 kg, bases (2 pieces) 5 kg

Our Philosophy
Objects always tell the truth.
All I can do is just to face with them sincerely and give
them deep affection as much as I can.
There is no boundary of nationalities and of eras in beauty.
But I think now is the time we choose 'Japanese style' and it
will be the best way to remind us of what we are losing
today and to question us about an essence of beauty again.
I hope that you can touch the memories which the objects here have,
feel and think of something invisible but exists undoubtedly.
