About the Item
This is an antique Japanese low table, notable for its extremely simple yet powerful structure—consisting of a single solid board resting atop a sturdy base. Both materials date back to the Meiji to Taisho periods (1860s–1920s), carrying with them the weight of history and the passage of time. The tabletop is a rare single slab of horse chestnut (Tochi), while the base is made of cedar, adorned with a strikingly beautiful grain.
The Tochi wood top bears the natural patina and character formed through decades of use, telling its own silent story. In contrast, the cedar base showcases flowing, elegant grain patterns, exuding both warmth and strength. While each element has a strong individuality, together they create a remarkable sense of harmony.
Its uses are highly versatile—seamlessly fitting into daily life as a sofa table or serving as a display platform to enhance works of art. As is natural with a single slab of solid wood, a slight warp can be observed on the tabletop. Depending on the floor surface, minor wobbling may occur; this can easily be adjusted by placing small wooden shims between the top and the base.
This low table embodies the Japanese spirit of wabi-sabi—the acceptance of imperfection and the appreciation of changes brought by time. The materials, colors, and form all radiate a quiet yet profound beauty, born from the union of simplicity and age.
