About the Item
This is an antique Japanese low table, believed to have been crafted in the early Shōwa period (1900s–1940s). Its quiet presence—shaped by many decades of use—has become part of its enduring charm. The tabletop is made from tochinoki (horse chestnut), known for its strong and striking grain, while the legs are crafted from sugi (cedar), which brings a warm and rustic character. These contrasting woods coexist harmoniously within a single piece of furniture.
The overall structure features an extremely minimal design centered around clean, straight lines. The unadorned and honest form is one of its defining characteristics. The thick single-plank top carries a strong presence, yet the low silhouette creates a sense of calm openness in the space. The subtle wear, luster, and fine marks accumulated over the years speak to how carefully this table has been used and cared for, offering a depth of character that cannot be artificially reproduced.
The condition is excellent. While the beautiful signs of aging remain, the table is highly functional. It can serve not only as a sofa table or side table, but thanks to the thickness of the horse-chestnut top and the sturdy cedar legs, it is stable enough to be used as a bench as well. Its low center of gravity and solid construction give it outstanding stability and safety.
