About the Item

This is an antique Japanese low table featuring a separate top and base, allowing for easy movement and placement. It is believed to have been crafted in the Meiji period (1860s–1900s) and has been carefully preserved through the passage of time. Both the tabletop and base are made of Japanese cedar, with the tabletop being a commanding single slab that defines the piece’s presence. Cedar of this size and strength is exceptionally rare in modern times. The tabletop’s grain bears the deep character imparted by decades of natural aging, with undulating growth rings creating distinctive shadows and patterns. To the touch, it feels smooth and naturally fitting to the hand, carrying a texture that cannot be replicated through artificial processing. The grain and shape suggest it once came from a massive tree, evoking the strength of a trunk that stood rooted in the earth, weathering countless seasons. It is a true gift from nature, with an unmistakable sense of life force. The base, carved from a thick block of cedar, firmly supports the tabletop. When positioned as shown in the photographs, the table remains relatively stable with minimal wobbling. However, as the tabletop retains its natural form, slight unevenness may occur depending on placement. In such cases, stability can easily be improved by inserting small wooden shims between the top and base. This adaptable structure allows for arrangement to suit different spaces and purposes. With its generous scale and natural beauty, the table makes a striking centerpiece in any setting. It complements both traditional Japanese interiors and modern spaces, and also serves beautifully as a display stand for vases or sculptures. The warmth of the wood, combined with the texture nurtured over centuries, brings a quiet strength to everyday life. This piece embodies the Japanese spirit of wabi-sabi, embracing the beauty found in imperfection and the patina of time. It is a table best appreciated by those who value the natural forms shaped by nature and history—forms that reveal new discoveries and inspiration each time they are viewed. Weight: Top 25 kg, Base 6.5 kg ___________________________________ Our Philosophy Objects always tell the truth. All I can do is just to face with them sincerely and give them deep affection as much as I can. There is no boundary of nationalities and of eras in beauty. But I think now is the time we choose 'Japanese style' and it will be the best way to remind us of what we are losing today and to question us about an essence of beauty again. I hope that you can touch the memories which the objects here have, feel and think of something invisible but exists undoubtedly.
