Jean Claude Dresse, Pair of side tables in Mosaic brass and agate, Belgium, 1970.
This unique pair of side tables by Dresse belonged to a private collection in Namur, Belgium. Made to measure, they are 80 cm in diameter, an exceptionally large size for side tables. Beyond their dimensions, the quality of this creation lies in its handcrafted construction, adorned with a brass mosaic. All Dresse pieces are handmade: "The only tools used are scissors to cut the mosaics and a polisher for the finishing touches." The thick, luxurious tabletop is edged with polished brass and rests on an architectural base of black lacquered metal. The mosaic inlay gives this piece a dynamic look and great visual depth. It is important to note that Dresse was the first company to produce this type of metal or stone mosaic table in Belgium. Today, these mosaic patterns are emblematic of Belgian design from the 1970s and 1980s, testifying to the significance of Dresse design and this unique table.
Only one of the table is signed 'Dresse' on the side.

Jean Claude Dresse (1946) is a Belgian artist and designer. He graduated from the art academy in Charleroi. His interest in the visual artist is clearly visible in his furniture designs as he uses artistic techniques such as mosaic and etchings. He makes use of precious metals such as brass and copper. Together with his father he was a prominent figure in the furniture business in the 1980s and he belongs to the artistic Walloon school that focused on glamorous esthetics. When his father died and the market was more difficult, he could not continue to make the furniture on his own so he became a visual artist.
