Paul Kingma sofa side table in white Netherlands 1986

About the Item

This exceptional one-off square-shaped sofa side table was designed and crafted by Paul Kingma in Holland in 1986. Renowned for his architectural tables, Kingma's creations pay tribute to the riches of nature, inspired by his extensive travels in search of rare materials, both raw and industrially produced. He skillfully combined architectural elements such as stone, metal, and concrete with rich, varied materials like brass, copper, glass, and ceramic, ensuring that each of his tables was a unique, one-of-a-kind production. As his fame grew, many of his pieces were custom orders for clients. This particular table is a beautiful example featuring bright stone tiles set against a white stone background. It is a small-sized side table from 1986, marked with a brass metal plate hand-engraved with "Kingma 1986" on the top. The table is in good and original condition, with a base consisting of two metal L-shaped supports that ingeniously rely on gravity to hold the robust top in place. The natural colors on the white slate create a simple yet compelling visual presence, enhancing the table’s aesthetic appeal and showcasing Kingma's talent for blending materials into harmonious designs. Kingma’s love for nature shines through in this table. Where the white basic elements lay a contrasting base for the details in the stones and metal materials used. Each table is a one-of-a-kind piece, handcrafted with great care and precision, showcasing Kingma’s dedication to creating extraordinary furniture that connects with the beauty of the natural world. Born in The Hague, Paul Kingma studied art in Arnhem before training at the Rijks Akademie [State Academy of Fine Arts] in Amsterdam and the Royal Academy of Arts in London. Over the course of his career, he was commissioned to create several sculptures for public spaces in Dutch cities such as Utrecht, Eindhoven, & Amersfoort.
