About the Item

This large colourful coffee table was designed by Johannes Aasbjerg Andersen (1921-2006) in the 1950s. Executed by Aasbjerg & Ørtoft by special commission in 1965. The table has 24 decorative and unique handmade enamel tiles on top. And the tabletop frame is of solid Brazilian rosewood. The legs are black lacquered steel with solid Brazilian rosewood feet. One of the tiles on top is signed by hand and dated 1965. Aasbjerg & Ørtoft was founded by Johannes and his brother Harry Ørtoft after the Second World War. They were both cabinetmakers but Johannes furthermore the designer and salesman. They started out producing bespoke pieces in the wealthy areas just north of Copenhagen, and later on when business was growing they began exporting to Europe and the USA. The black and white catalogue photos from Danish luxury department store Illum Bolighus showcase the table together with chairs by Italian architect and designer Gio Ponti. Note, due to the rosewood, allow time for CITES-certificate to be applied for.
