Biedermeier sewing table, 19th century Southern Germany (Baden-Württemberg) Walnut Biedermeier, circa 1820-1830 Dimensions: H x W x D: 76 x 58 x 39 cm Description: Biedermeier salon, work or sewing table. Solid walnut and veneered on softwood. Beautiful grain pattern. Drawer with interior division. Solid full columns act as table legs. Condition: Completely restored and in very good condition. Shellac polish. Comparable objects can be found in the literature: Rainer Haaff - BiedermeierWelten p. 180 Good to know about wood of walnut: Walnut was and is probably the most popular European precious wood for antique furniture of all epochs. In contrast to cherry or oak wood, which were out of fashion from time to time, walnut wood was always popular and we find it especially on antiques from the baroque, Louis XVI, Biedermeier and Art Nouveau periods. The beautiful grain lends itself to mirrored veneer images. South German and Austrian Biedermeier furniture is often veneered with walnut on softwood.In baroque and Louis XVI furniture we find walnut in combination with lighter woods such as maple or ash. Due to the fine pores of the wood, it is perfectly suited for shellac polishes.But wax or oil sealings are also possible. The structure of walnut wood ranges from simple straight lines to wild and lively. Also the color is absolutely interesting and can go from light reddish to dark brown even within one trunk. In Central and Southern Europe walnut was used both as solid wood and as veneer. Due to its good workability and beautiful wood structure, walnut is still one of the most popular woods in furniture and interior design. The walnut wood used in the time of origin of our furniture came from the respective region of origin of the furniture.
