19th-Century Neo-Classical Table
About the Item
This table’s bold, graphic, and geometrical marquetry in satinwood and rosewood recalls the paintings of Bridget Riley and other 1960s Op Art artists. The patterning even extends to the table's lion-paw feet, mounted with brass wheels, which were carved from blocks of these layered and contrasting woods, as would have been more obvious before they darkened with age and use.
The table’s Neo-Classical form comports with the sophisticated taste of the 1840s, but since that form was popular nearly everywhere from New England to Russia, and Scandinavia to Italy, we have yet to determine where it was made. That said, it could be Czechoslovakian, since it brings to mind a pair of inlaid chairs we had years ago, which were said to be from there, according to their knowledgeable previous owner who bought from reputable dealers. Yet the table could also have been made nearby in nearby western Austria, or to the south in the Italian region of Friuli.
