Anglo Indian Heavily Carved Round Tilt Top Table, mid 19th Century

About the Item

A fine and intricately carved Anglo Indian hardwood tilt top pedestal table, British Colonial period, mid 19th century, Ceylon or India. The pedestal tilt top table features a wide circular table top carved in deep relief with a dense pictorial border featuring majestic domed buildings and high mountain peaks surrounded by scrolling jungle foliage inhabited by lions, serpents, and long tailed birds. The impressively large sloped apron is heavily carved and pierced with a dense design of scrolling vegetation with berries and birds scattered throughout. The table top rests upon a pedestal support caved with a fantastic design of intertwined serpents above spread winged birds. The legs of splayed cabriole form with vine details and acanthus leaf carved feet. The table top features a locking tilt top function. The hardwood overall with a dark brown (near black) patina with red brown highlights. The un-carved center of the tabletop with a much lighter patina of luminous light honey brown.
