About the Item
An antique mahogany occasional table with specimen marble and micro mosaic top.
The partially ebonized mahogany base comprises of a fluted and gadrooned stem on a tri-form plinth base with raised acanthus-leaf feet.
The inset circular top has sections of semi-precious marbles/stones including Egyptian porphyry, Convent Sienna, Swedish Porphyry, Breccia Violeta and Lapis Lazuli. In the centre of the top is an extremely fine micro mosaic panel depicting the scene ‘Doves of Pliny’.

A magnificent antique pair of carved and painted wooden console tables, in the manner of William Kent. Two entwined stylized dolphins with centred scallop shells act as supports for the original Breccia Violetta marble tops. Their inapt faces, striking fins, fish scales and extravagantly splayed tails are based on ancient Greek mythological representations. The scallop shells represents Venus and the dolphins represents Neptune. The breakfront plinths are carved with overlapping acanthus leaves.
