About the Item
The Akopechtli Komali side table is the result of the collaboration between Sebastián Arroyo Hoebens and Elena Boils. The design was inspired by the round shape and thin edges of the Comal.
There is much to say about the Comal: there are many myths, symbolisms and traditions linked to this object in Mexican culture. The Comal is sometimes referred to as a mother's womb, where essential ingredients come together to give birth to humanity (maize being the most important; many indigenous Mexican societies call themselves "sons of maize"). In reference to this symbolic conjunction, the center of the table is designed with an indentation in which one can place something that is precious to them, something that they would like to see embraced and warmed by the table, similar to placing food inside the Comal.
The cylindrical base is wrapped with decorations inspired by both pre-Hispanic Mexican forms and modernist Mexican design.
Founded in 2014 by Montserrat Castañón, Ángulo Cero was born as a space to think about design from an artistic perspective. Its curatorial approach inclines towards the experimentation of materials and formal languages, commissioning collections for a sophisticated market inside and outside of Mexico.
