About the Item

Circular table, 1934 Oak, steel, red lacquered linoleum base Height 100 cm Designed in 1934 by DSB’s chief architect Knud Tanggaard Seest for use in the waiting rooms of Danish railway stations. The table exemplifies Seest’s restrained functionalism from the interwar years, combining industrial precision with a quiet sense of dignity. The contrast between the black-polished oak top and the red linoleum base reflects Seest’s aim to modernize the visual language of the Danish railways: robust, hygienic, and contemporary, yet rooted in craftsmanship. Produced under the direction of the DSB architectural department, the table embodies the transition from late national romantic design to a distinctly modern public aesthetic that shaped mid-century Denmark.
