Jules Wabbes for Mobilier Universel, wenge and metal with canon de fusil metal, Belgium, 1960s. This large wenge table is one of Jules Wabbes personal favourites. The top is executed with wenge end-grain wood top. End-grain cut is particulary strong and shows a very refined patterned grain. The hexogonal foot is finished with a nickel layer that is called canon de fusil since has the appearance of a gun barral. This table is a great example of the great craftsmanship of Jules Wabbes. The design is simplistic, yet executed in luxurious material and high quality, time-consuming techniques like the cross-cut top. Jules Wabbes (1919-1974) was a Belgian furniture designer, architect and professor. He started to design furniture as an autodidact. The reason was the he opened an antique shop with Louise Carrey. In this shop, many items had to be restored, which lead to Wabbes learning the trade by trial and error. Wabbes' design is known for being stately and architectural. He is known for his use of luxurious materials such as rosewood and wengé and modest but chic designs. The reason is that he focussed on timeless design, both in material as in aesthetics. Another distinctive trait of his furniture is that the furniture is perfectly finished on all sides so it can be used freely within any space. He founded Mobilier Universel with the aim of supplying the American market, most of his furniture is made by Mobilier Universel. He was a designer who controlled the whole process from beginning to the end. This table has a certificate of authenticity that is signed by Marie Ferran-Wabbes.
