Pierluigi Spadolini for 1P 'Boccio' Round Dining Table in Resin

About the Item

Pierluigi Spadolini for 1P (Permaflex), 'Boccio' dining table, polyurethane resin, Italy, 1972 This dining set is designed by Italian architect and designer (1922-2000) Pierluigi Spadolini for 1P. In the 1960s and 1970s, there was an explosion of shapes, colors, and materials in decorative arts. The use of organic forms and plastics in this design places the table in the Pop Art era, reminiscent of the contemporaneous experimentation of avant-garde sculptors. Designers moved away from traditional production methods towards innovative design techniques. Furniture from the 1960s and 1970s was influenced by advancements in technology, leading to a wider variety of materials being used. Designers began to incorporate new materials, such as inflatable PVC, disposable cardboard, latex and polyester foam, into furniture design. These materials allowed for the creation of soft, organic shapes that promoted relaxation and comfort. Additionally, plastic in various forms, including hard, smooth, and shiny, became popular, as well as intense, fashionable colors. American, Italian, and Finnish designers were particularly successful in promoting and distributing plastic furniture. This table was designed with functionality in mind and aimed to fully utilize the technical capabilities of the material used in its production. Polyurethane resin, which is used for the entire construction, enabled Spadolini to create geometric and organic forms with a smooth finish. The base is molded into a concave shape with a streamlined and curvilinear layout as result. The deep black color in combination with the used material and final construction ensure that it can be placed as a visual statement in one's interior. Kindly note that this table is in used condition and needs to be resprayed. The price listed includes respraying. This can be done before shipping by our experienced craftspeople in our own in-house restoration atelier. Contemporary Dining Table, Black Polished Resin, by Erik Olovsson

Spine is a series of tables consisting of two components, a thin aluminum sheet captured in a cast resin surface. The series is a result of many material explorations concerned with bent forms and enhanced flexibility. The spine of each table is formed from a 10mm plate of aluminum. The aluminum is scored on both sides, allowing for the dramatic curve to be formed. The aluminum is anodized and set in place before the resin surface is cast around the skeletal form. As the resin bonds it constrains the aluminum, suspending the spines´ curve and creating the tables structure. Traces of the organic curve remain visible through the polished resin...
