About the Item
A Very Rare and Incredible 17/18 (1600-1700's) C. North Italian Scagliola Panel with Parrots, Peacocks, Flowers, Vines, and More. A central roundel depicting a kneeling monk presenting a lily serves as the focal point of this North Italian scagliola panel, likely produced in Carpi in the late 1600s or early 1700s. The figure is surrounded by a dense composition of mirrored parrots, peacocks, goldfinches, and smaller birds set amid scrolling foliage and large flowering stems. Executed in colored plaster inlay on a black ground, the composition is bordered on three sides by a trailing floral frieze framed by narrow cream bands. The birds are distributed symmetrically around the central figure, with parrots perched on elaborate volutes, their beaks grasping spherical fruits. Peacocks with heart-shaped ocelli in their tails are positioned near the corners, and the arrangement of floral and vegetal forms demonstrates precise axis mirroring throughout the panel.
The surface is composed entirely of scagliola, a labor-intensive technique involving the use of selenite-based gypsum mixed with natural pigments and animal glue, which is poured, inlaid, carved, or modeled into decorative motifs. Once hardened, the surface is scraped, polished, and waxed to produce a smooth, marbled finish that imitates pietra dura and inlaid stone. The technique was especially favored for ecclesiastical and aristocratic interiors during the 17th and 18th centuries in Italy. In this example, the complex layering of leaves, overlapping stems, and intricately shaped birds with distinct feather markings attests to a high level of precision and planning. The shaded floral elements and subtle use of color gradients would have required careful pigment preparation and meticulous carving of the plaster matrix before final polishing.
Panels of this type were commonly used as antependia—altar frontals—designed to mimic richly embroidered silk textiles. The structure and iconography of this panel align closely with documented works by the scagliolisti of Carpi, particularly those by Marco Mazelli, Ludovico Leoni, Giovanni Pozzuoli, and Giovanni Massa. These workshops were known for their symmetrical foliate scrolls and figural reserves rendered in soft, chalk-based pigments. The composition of this panel, with its central saintly figure, balanced layout, and elaborate natural forms, is consistent with examples illustrated in *La Scagliola Carpigiana* (Modena, 1990, pp. 38–39, 90) and *I Maestri della Scagliola in Emilia Romagna e Marche* by G. Manni (1997, pp. 86–137; 152–199). Surviving examples of this scale and complexity are rare, particularly those retaining both figural medallions and complete mirrored bird arrangements within a single unified decorative program.
