About the Item
A Fine Quality Early 19th Century, George III Period, Mahogany Library Table Of Unusually Small Proportions, Having Well Figured Rectangular Top With Elegant Tablet End Supports, United By High Stretcher, With Attractive Brass Moulded Decoration And Four Sabre Legs Terminating On Original Brass Castors.
This super quality little library, or writing table, is superbly executed and oozes class, sophistication and elegance. It is constructed from the finest quality mahogany timber that would have been available at the time and is enhanced by the lovely brass mouldings.
Typical of the late 18th, or early 19th century in terms of its relatively simplistic design it has a real charm to it. Its difficult to pinpoint quite where the table would originally have been made for, but certainly for modern day living the dimensions are fabulous and open up a whole variety of different spots around the hone which could accomodate it for a wide variety of different uses.
Overall the condition is excellent with no damage of any note to mention at all. As with all items which we offer for sale it has been inspected in our workshops by our highly skilled, trained antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish before being offered for sale.

A Very Good Quality George III Period Mahogany Sofa Table, Of Rare Diminutive Proportions, Having Well Figured Rectangular Top Having Drop Flap To Each End, Over One Long Drawer & One False Drawer To Reverse With Replacement Brass Handles, Raised On Square End Supports With Elegant High Stretcher And Four Sabre Legs Terminating On Original Brass Castors.
This chamring little sofa table is of really unusual size, the kind of proportions which we have rarely come across before, but those proportions are absolutely great for both function and elegance. It is just about small enough to not dominate the centre of a room, or even to just tuck into a corner, whilst at the same time retaining a little presence.
Its constructed from good quality mahogany timbers and instead of the two drawers at the front which is more commonly found on its full size counterparts it has just one elongated drawer and of course another false drawer to the reverse.
Sofa tables were relatively commonly found throughout the 18th and 19th centuries and as the name suggests they were originally designed to sit behind a sofa, although a common misconception is that they were meant to butt right up against the sofa itself.
Actually they were normally designed to sit a few feet away from the sofa, hence the false drawers on reverse. That said they also look quite happy pushed right up against the back of a sofa and are such useful, versatile items of furniture.
As with all of our items this georgian mahogany sofa table...

Georgian Mahogany Dropleaf Dining Table

An Extremely Good Quality, Mid-18th Century, George II Period Solid Mahogany Oval Drop Leaf Dining Table, To Seat 8 People, Having Extremely Well Figured Two Flap Top Retaining Exceptional, Rich, Untouched Colour And Patina, Raised On Four Elegant Turned Legs Terminating With Original Pad Feet.
Georgian drop leaf dining tables of this design are relatively common to find, however it is rare to find one of this size and in this condition, which retains such a fabulous colour and patina. It is also quite nice to find an oval one, which is not far off being circular when extended.
This is a superb example of its type, constructed from what would have been the absolute best solid mahogany available in the mid 18th century and because of that the table is still as fit for purpose as the day it was made. It is particularly solid even with the moving legs fully extended and this allows for great functionality.
Of course another tick on the desirability scale for this table is that it can be easily folded down and even pushed against a wall, or into a corner when not in full use, meaning one does not require such a large dining room as may otherwise have been required. The table also retains a fabulous untouched colour and patina and has very clearly not ever been stripped and repolished or anything like that.
Seating 8, this table is one of one of the most desirable antique dining table forms available and would work with a whole variety of different dining chairs...
