About the Item

A Fine and Possibly Unique Mid-18th-Century George III Mahogany Tray-Top Tripod Table, Circa 1760-1770, Ireland This exceptional mid-18th-century George III tripod table represents the height of elegance and craftsmanship. The solid, one-piece moulded tray top is beautifully set with a fine parquetry star inlay, resting atop a robust stop-fluted column. The column transitions gracefully into a finely carved gadrooned baluster and is supported by three cabriole legs. Each leg is adorned with intricately carved floral and acanthus details at the knee, terminating in exquisitely carved, rare hairy wolf feet. The table is raised on what appear to be the original brass casters, further enhancing its authenticity. Condition: The table retains its original colour and patination throughout, showcasing a rich, warm finish with no breaks, signs of restoration, or alterations. It also features its original bearers, block, casters and banjo latch, making it a remarkably preserved example of Georgian furniture. Tripod tables of this form gained widespread popularity in England during the reign of King George II and continued to be in vogue through the late 18th century. The golden age for this model is considered to be from 1760-1770, when leading cabinet makers such as Thomas Chippendale and Henry Hill produced some of the finest examples. This table aligns with the exceptional craftsmanship of the period and is a testament to the enduring appeal of this timeless design. This table’s outstanding design, rarity, and superb condition make it a collector’s dream and a significant addition to any distinguished collection of Georgian furniture.
