About the Item

This English Victorian period tilt-top table has a octagonal top, decorated with polychrome paint and inlaid mother-of-pearl, depicting a landscape with antique temple architecture, all on a black and greenish lacquered ground, raised on a central baluster supported by three curved legs, all decorated with gilded patterns on a black lacquered ground. It is in good used condition. The top is a wobbly. The fashion for black lacquered, parcel gilded, polychrome painted and mother-of-pearl inlaid furniture was extremely popular in the third quarter of the 19th century in Europe, especially after the 1851 Great Exhibition at London's Crystal Palace, where many inventive and finely decorated pieces were shown.
