19th Century French Walnut Drafting Table or Standing Desk with Maker’s Label

About the Item

This late nineteenth century French walnut adjustable architect’s drafting table features the maker's label, E. Chouanard. The table top adjusts in pitch, height, as well as right and left orientation, and is supported by a turned central column on a molded X base with castors. It is titled "Table Soleil" which translates to sun table in English. Walnut straps, fitted with a spring loaded mechanism on the long ends of the table, allow for large sheets of paper to be held in place when drafting. Manufactured by Emile Chouanard, the director of the Aux Forges de Vul-cain in Paris at 3 rue Saint-Denis. The versatility of this piece makes it ideal as an easel, occasional table, or standing desk. c. 1880. Tray 35" X 21.5" Base 23.5" X 16.6" Height 30.5" to 47.5"
