About the Item

A large and rare Papier-mâché tray table with intricate view of castle in mother of pearl inlay on the top set in a serpentine shaped surround with gilded foliate borders and gold gilt border around the castle. Twelve graceful legs in sets of three support each corner. "Jennens and Bettridge was a partnership between Theodore Jennens, John Bettridge Sr, Aaron Jennens and John Bettridge Jr and later only A. Jennens and J. Bettridge Jr. 1815–1864) were highly regarded for producing quality papier-mâché wares. They acquired the workshops of Henry Clay, Japanner to George III and the Prince of Wales, in 1816. Their original premises were in Birmingham and they started a London branch at 3 West Halkin Street, Belgravia in 1837. Later offices were established in Paris and New York. Royal commissions were received from not only by George IV, but also by William IV and later, Queen Victoria. Initially the bulk of their production was trays and other small wares but by 1839 they were producing larger items and in that year supplied Buckingham Palace with two folding screens."
