About the Item

1930s Brazilian Butterfly Wing Tray of Santos, Brazil This exquisite 1930s Brazilian tray is a stunning example of traditional butterfly wing art, featuring a beautifully handcrafted landscape scene beneath glass, created with colorful and iridescent butterfly wings. The image depicts a serene hilly water scene at sunset, with a lone boat in the distance and a graceful palm tree in the foreground, evoking the tropical beauty of Santos, Brazil, whose name is elegantly inscribed in gold paint at the bottom of the image. Framed by a finely crafted wooden border with decorative banding, this tray exemplifies the artistry and craftsmanship of Brazilian souvenir pieces from the early to mid-20th century. During this period, butterfly wing trays and jewelry were popular as luxurious handcrafted mementos, prized for their shimmering natural beauty and intricate detailing. In good condition, this tray remains structurally stable, with only light scuffing on the back corners and a non-structural crack near one of the screws, neither of which affect its integrity or display appeal.

1930's Art Deco Mobil Gas Pegasus Metal Ashtray This striking 1930s Art Deco metal Mobil Gas Pegasus ashtray is a fantastic piece of vintage advertising and design. The sculptural form showcases a beautifully detailed Pegasus in mid-flight, dramatically rising from a rugged cliffside. Cast entirely in metal, the piece is both functional and decorative, with a wide ashtray base and its original felt bottom, which remains intact despite some expected wear. During the early 20th century, ashtrays were a popular form of advertising merchandise, particularly in the 1930s and 1940s, when companies sought to incorporate stylish and durable branding into everyday objects. RARE VINTAGE MORPHO BUTTERFLY TRAY HANDMADE BY A DEVIL'S ISLAND PRISONER 1940's
Located in Pulborough, GB
Antiques of London What makes this piece truly special is its unique backstory. According to the attached note, this tray was handmade by a prisoner on Devil’s Island, a notorious penal colony off the coast of French Guiana. It was brought back in the 1940s by a seafaring relative, the note on the back says: “This tray was made by a prisoner on Devil’s Island, brought home by Nevine Needham’s cousin sometime in the 1940s. At that time, he was a Second Officer in the Merchant Navy, and when ships were calling at Argentina, they had to dock at Devil’s Island because the water was too shallow on the mainland at that point.” Butterfly wing crafts like this were often sold or bartered by prisoners and local artisans to passing sailors. This exceptional piece is not only a beautiful vintage butterfly wing tray...
