About the Item

A richly carved Black Forest serving tray in oak, dating to the late 19th century, circa 1880. This hand-carved piece showcases the traditional craftsmanship associated with the Black Forest region, distinguished by its sculptural depth and botanical motifs. The tray’s surface features an exuberant foliate design radiating from a central medallion, likely meant to evoke a sunflower or stylized edelweiss. The relief carving is crisp and detailed, with careful texturing that plays beautifully with light. The edge of the tray is framed with a carved bark-like motif, lending a rustic finish that echoes the naturalist tradition of the era. The handles are sculpted in the form of gnarled branches, both decorative and functional, allowing the tray to be easily lifted and carried. The reverse bears a distinctive crosshatched pattern, adding a sense of completeness to the object’s design.
