About the Item

A Japanese lacquered altar table / box, Showa period, 1937. Teak and Cedar, lacquered in read and black on the outside. Exquisitely carved dragon design in the front and back. The top is detachable, to reveal a wide inner compartment. The black-lacquered top presents some wood warping, probably due to age and use. Some minor losses throughout the gilt finish are also present. Signed and dated at the bottom, August 1937.
