About the Item

1920s Art Deco Vanity Dressing Table Attributed to Henry Van De Velde This dressing table, attributed to Henry Van der Velde, showcases the elegant simplicity and functional design characteristic of the Art Deco movement. Crafted from beautifully figured wood, bird's-eye maple, it features a tri-fold mirror, a central display area with a glass top, and two side cabinets with curved doors. The warm, reddish-brown finish enhances the natural beauty of the wood grain. The piece likely dates from the early 20th century. Henry Van de Velde (1863-1957) was a Belgian painter, architect, and designer considered a pioneer of Art Deco and a significant influence on the Bauhaus movement. He advocated for functional design and the use of natural materials, rejecting excessive ornamentation in favor of clean lines and organic forms. Art Deco furniture often incorporated luxurious materials like exotic woods and decorative elements, and this vanity exemplifies that trend with its use of bird's eye maple. This vanity, likely dating from the 1920s or 1930s, showcases the geometric forms and rich materials characteristic of Art Deco design. Crafted from birdseye maple veneer, it features a triptych mirror, a central glass-covered display area, and flanking cabinets with oval panels. The warm, reddish-brown finish adds to its allure. The geometric shape, use of birdseye maple, and stepped form are indicative of Art Deco. While some elements might hint at Art Moderne, the overall design aligns more closely with the earlier Art Deco aesthetic, which emphasized symmetry and geometric patterns rather than the streamlined curves of Art Moderne. 56.75” wide x 14.5” deep x 72.5” high 20.5” floor to bottom of fall front door.
