Mid-Century Modern Yellow and Sand Colored Mosaic Berthold Muller Coffee Table
Located in Weesp, NL
Colorful mosaic and brass coffee table by the artist Berthold Muller. All of Berthold Muller's creations are unique. The mosaic tiles are arrayed in a beautiful abstract design, reminiscent of modern art of the period. The table top is in great condition. The border is made of solid brass. The table will be shipped insured overseas in a custom made wooden crate. Cost of transport is crate included. Born in Oerlinghausen near Bielefeld in 1893, [ Berthold Müller, he himself added Oerlinghausen to his name later, began his studies of sculpture under Hans Perathoner at the Bielefeld College of Arts and Crafts in 1910 while still a schoolboy. Completing his grammar school education in the classical humanities in Bielefeld in 1912, he moved to Berlin in 1914 and studied at the Charlottenburg School of Applied Arts. During the First World War he was conscripted for service with cavalry regiments in Russia, Galicia and France. In 1919 he was able to continue his interrupted studies in Berlin under Hans Perathoner and Willy Jäckel. In 1922, together with his wife, Jenny Wiegmann, he converted to Catholicism at the Abbey of Maria Laach. During the 1920s he devoted himself to religious art: commissions for sculptures on church buildings, participation in the “Exhibition of Religious Art” at the Ernst Arnold Gallery in Dresden and in the Vatican Mission Exhibition in the Holy Year of 1925 with his large sculpture “Pope Gregory the Great”. In 1929 he took part in the annual exhibition of the Berlin Secession and, in 1931, in the exhibitions of the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin. It was also in 1931 that he and his wife Jenny separated. Two years later, in 1933, he married Emily Sturm. In that same year he organized, and took part in, the Catholic section of the Exhibition of Ecclesiastical Art...

Indo-Persian Khatam Micro Mosaic Jewelry Box
Located in North Hollywood, CA
Handcrafted Khatam wooden box with very delicate micro mosaic marquetry from the ancient Persian technique of inlaying from arrangements of so many delicate pieces of wood, precious wood, and delicate miniatures paintings. This beautiful Middle Eastern Persian style box is covered inside and out with fine Moorish micro mosaic marquetry. Indo Persian Moorish style micro mosaic inlaid jewelry box with lid. Intricate inlaid Asian Indian box with floral and geometric Islamic Moorish Sadeli design in a square shape form with inlay marquetry, very fine artwork, lined in red velvet. A highly skilled craft, it has had a long history in India and the Middle East with early examples dating back to the 16th century. In the 1800s, it became popular as a decoration on a variety of boxes, card cases, and chess boards imported from India. Since Bombay became a center of making them, they became known as Bombay boxes...

19C Anglo Indian Sadeli Mosaic Greeting Card Case
Located in Dallas, TX
Presenting a superb 19C Anglo Indian Sadeli Mosaic greeting card case. Made in or around Bombay, India circa 1880. This is a greeting card case used for holding your greeting cards or business cards of the day ! The body of the case is made from sandalwood and it is fully overlaid with bone and highly intricate Sadeli Mosaic made up of thousands of micro mosaic pieces of bone, ebony, silver/pewter and semi precious stone. The workmanship is stupenduous !!!! This case is almost museum quality. One or two very, very minor losses of mosaic mainly where the top meets the body but otherwise near mint ! SADELI MOSAIC: “Anglo Indian boxes were made in India for the English residents from the early part of the 18th century. They were brought back or sent back to England usually by the people who had commissioned them. From the beginning of the nineteenth century they were imported more commercially, although not in any significant numbers until the middle decades. They were very highly valued, especially the early ones, to the extent that the designs were copied on late 19th and early 20th century tins. The ancient art of Sadeli Mosaic is said to have been introduced from Shiraz in Persia via Sind to Bombay, a long time before the Anglo Indian boxes were made. It was a technique, which required a high degree of skill and patience. It was executed very lavishly, in that the frequent cuts wasted a great amount of the precious materials used. The workmanship was however more than commensurable to the value of the materials. Ivory, silver, pewter (or other metals), wood and horn were cut into faceted rods which were bound together to form geometric patterns. When the glue has set, the rods were sliced in transverse sections. This gave the maker a number of angled circular pieces in the original pattern. Several variations of patterns could be achieved by combining the materials in different ways. The ivory was sometimes dyed green to give an extra color. The mosaic pieces in a combination of patterns, often separated by ivory, ebony, horn or silver stringing were used to veneer sandalwood boxes. In the early boxes, which date from the turn of the 18th to the 19th century, there are large panels of mosaic covering tops and sides of boxes. It took incredible skill to cover such large areas without any shakes or wavering of the pattern. The corners and joins on these boxes are impeccably matched. The makers (reputed to be Persian) of Sadeli mosaic made in the first two decades of the 19th century displayed a total understanding of the qualities of the different materials they used. They combined substances, which can expand and contract according to atmospheric conditions with others, which are hard and unyielding. The result was a sharp definition of the lines and patterns, which made up the whole design. On the early boxes the designs look deceptively simple. The fact is, they emerged from a culture, which had mastered geometry and understood how to generate a pattern from a set number of points. The patterns are so harmoniously combined that their incredible complexity is not immediately apparent. The earliest Sadeli boxes...

Genaro Alvarez Mosaic Glass Tile Cocktail Table Mexico, circa 1955
Located in Camden, ME
Classic glass tile mosaic coffee table from the Mexico City Studio of the noted artist Genaro Alvarez dating from the mid-1950s. There are three different compositional designs in the creation of this mosaic top. The first is the abstract pictorial of a universe of white, crème and grey surrounding a "Black Hole" with a galaxy of yellow and black swirling along its serpentine "lariat" of a double ended orbit path marked by gold tiles. The second is the consistent placement of the background tiles in concise repetitive patterns of concentric half circular arcs. The third is the placement of gold mirrored tiles adding points of sparkle over the entire surface as the intersection points of a grid, a very interesting and sophisticated addition. The integration of these three design elements adds an unexpected complexity and cohesion to the overall composition. Genaro Alvarez is recognized as one Mexico's great mid century masters of mosaic design of his era and had an international reputation and clientele with several major architectural installations here in the United States. From Don Shoemaker dot com. "One artist that was recognized for his mosaic furniture creations is Genaro Alvarez. The Genaro Alvarez Studio, (located in Mexico City) was known for its mosaic work in murals and floor designs as well as decorative furnishings such as lamps, trays and furniture using various types of natural rocks...
