52"h Postmodern Colorful Painting by Carlos Frésquez (Raspberry Float, 1987)

About the Item

An early Carlos Frésquez original oil on canvas painting in a Postmodern style, titled Raspberry Float (1987) signed and titled en verso, referencing the Abstract Expressionist movement with its painterly drips, and Jackson Pollack, specifically, with intentional "splatters". We love the skillfully rendered trompe-l'œil "crumpled paper" areas of the painting. Another wonderful detail is the manner in which a faux "frame" has been painted around the piece, with some areas that are intentionally made to appear to "break through" the frame and add dimensionality. Mr. Frésquez received his Fine Art MFA from the University of Colorado in 1995 and has been exhibited widely, including international exhibitions, since 2008. He has been interviewed extensively and has won many awards for his work. Frésquez’s work was included in the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s very first exhibition of Chicano art in 1992. The recurring themes of justice and Chicano culture are at the heart of nearly all of Fresquez’s work, which ranges from abstracts on canvas to collage to street art and even theater set design. Fresquez has said that his artistic vision was most profoundly shaped by the Chicano movement and that his art gained meaning and momentum when he began opening himself up to “the spiritual,” which he defines as “tapping into the soul or the spirit of a person.” The back features the original catalog label as provenance and testament to the steadily increasing valuations for Mr. Frésquez's work. 32ʺW × 1.5ʺD × 52.13ʺH
