About the Item
Collage is by, William Phelps Montgomery, signed and dated. William Phelps Montgomery was born in August 1948. The son of art historians, he grew up on the Henry Francis Dupont Winterthur Estate located in Wilmington, DE where his father was the director of the facility. From an early age, he was surrounded and learned to appreciate all different types of art. He drew great inspiration from the work of Mondrian and developed a career as an abstract and digital artist over the last three decades. His work has been exhibited nationwide and can be found in private and museum collections.
Artist comments:
Basically I simply paste pieces of paper and objects in place as they seem to fit. That means that the positioning of each piece has some relatively good design relationship from one to another area. I opened the photo and see that there are a number of areas that are markedly different. One reddish rectangle tilted was painted in and yet under a circular cut out piece of tissue paper used to create an area of attention and spacial context in front of the surrounding areas. This piece is based on a variety of artists like Hans Hoffman, Robert Rauschenberg and many other artists working in an abstract expressionistic fashion. I like the way I allowed a large amount of white or background space to be preserved.
