Ceramic Work from the Somieres Collection by Alberto Hernández, 1999

About the Item

Material: Clay/cooked clay and hand-painted with our own pigments. Great work of the important ceramic artist Alberto Hernández, signed and dated. Made on metal structure and cane. This whole process was filmed in its day in the documentary "Painting with fire" showing the adaptation that Hernández has made of the rakú technique in his work, by adding an intermediate step: direct contact with the flames to obtain the pictorial result. . With this procedure, Hernández has managed to make large paintings in a single piece. Known are his “bed bases”, paintings made from a metal bed base in which clay has been embedded in its holes to obtain a surface on which to paint and has been heated until the desired temperature is obtained. In the words of the artist about his work Somieres: For quite some time I have worked with old bed bases, I was interested at that time in the stories that the objects could contain. Human stories, naturally. The bed bases, in addition to that load, represented the possibility of using large-format supports without fragmenting. The problem then was twofold: on the one hand there was the technical issue. Working on a large surface at 980º C was very risky, not only physically, but also from the point of view of the result, since a large surface had to be covered in a very short time and there was not always a happy ending. On the other hand, they caused me great mental fatigue, because during the production process I couldn't help but think about the history that the object had accumulated, especially when the bed base had belonged to people very close to me, including my own parents. That is why I have not used these supports for a long time, although in the future I would like to face this challenge again. Condition: The baked clay is brittle and comes off small pieces if it is not handled carefully. The metal structure is bent so it is not completely straight if it is placed on the wall (See the first image taking the bottom part with respect to the wall as a reference).
