From the Nubia Collection (2007)

About the Item

Monumental in its scale, this work represents a close-up of an Egyptian figure. Painted by Spanish illustrator Carme Solé Vendrell born in 1944, this oil painting is part of the Nubia-series and was executed in 2007. Before creating large paintings, Vendrell has been illustrating children's books since 1968. She has been granted several awards for her contributions to the Catalonian society, notably the Premi Nacional de Cultura in 1979 and 2012. The Nubia-series illustrates faces of black men, women, and children with African names. This particular figure has its head turned slightly downwards, leaving us to wonder who the person behind the canvas might be. The quick brushstrokes reveal the impression of movement: as if the figure is about to move. Despite the grant scale of the canvas, the work evokes a certain intimacy. It is signed and dated by the artist in the lower left corner. This work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
