A Large Bright And Colorful Mosaic With Abstract Figures, Petronella & Jacob

About the Item

A large bright and colorful mosaic of several abstract figures called 'Geweld' (Violence), set in a concrete base. It is the counterpart of another mural called ‘Vrede’ (Peace). This mosaic was made by the Dutch artist couple Nel Klaassen and her husband Jacob Bouhuys. They were both originally from Arnhem, where Jacob ‘Jaap’ was born in 1903 and Petronella Hélène ‘Nel’ in 1906. They both studied at Art Academy ‘Kunstoefening’ in Arnhem and continued their studies at the prestigious Rijksakademie in Amsterdam where they met and eventually became a couple. In 1932, their last year at the Rijksakademie, both Nel and Jaap won the important Dutch Prix de Rome. The Prix de Rome was introduced by Louis Napoleon in 1808, based on the idea of the French Prix de Rome. The annual prize was to support promising young artists to be able to study in Rome, the cradle of the Roman antiques and Renaissance art. Nel won the golden medal and Jaap the silver one. With the significant prize money, the couple traveled to Italy, London and Paris to study and work. Both artists were heavily influenced by the new, foreign styles and techniques they encountered on this formative trip. The introduction to expressionism and cubism proved a lasting influence on their future work. Both artists received important public commissions for murals and interiors upon their return to the Netherlands. For over twenty years, Nel worked together with the architect Fritz Eschauzier with whom she worked on commissions for the interior of the Holland America Line, the Bijenkorf and several governmental buildings. Jaap received many commissions from his former tutor Roland Holst. Besides their individual work and commissions, the couple often collaborated on murals, mosaics and stained-glass windows. It is impossible to separate their individual styles. The visible abstraction of the figures in this Mosaic show clearly that the couple studied the work of well-known artists like George Braque and Pablo Picasso, whom Bouhuys and Klaassen met at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1936. The couple moved to the coastal village of Zandvoort in 1952 where they lived and worked on the boulevard overlooking the North Sea. Jacob died in 1983 and was outlived by eight years by Nel, who died in 1989. Note: The two last images show enlarged visuals of this work in an architectural setting.
