Chien-Chi Chang Original Signed & Framed Photographic Print, 2007

About the Item

For sale is an original signed museum-quality Magnum photographic print by world-renowned and critically acclaimed photographer Chien-Chi Chang (Taiwanese, b. 1961). Titled "Family members of immigrants working in New York City. Fuzhou, China. 2007", this Magnum print was a time-limited, hand-signed edition that was only available to purchase for a period of five days. The work is signed in black ink to the back on an affixed archival label, which carries the image’s accompanying text and is printed on Fuji Crystal Archive Matte paper. The photograph is mounted and presented in an elegant stained Oak wood frame. The accompanying text by the artist reads: "They were living their best life, thanks to their father who left Fuzhou to work non-stop at low-level jobs in New York’s Chinatown. His dream was a good life for his children. But is prosperity worth the social cost? Children are left fatherless, wives have no husbands, and viruses spread around the world that can make all we have valueless. We all wonder what is best for our children, and maybe the answers lie in the lives of people on both sides of our permeable borders. Look at them. Listen to their voices. You may not understand their language, but you can feel their longing." - Chien-Chi Chang About the Artist: Chien-Chi Chang is a Taiwanese photographer and artist known for his compelling documentary work that explores themes of alienation, migration, and human relationships. A longtime member of Magnum Photos, Chang’s work often delves into deeply personal and social issues, such as his acclaimed series The Chain, which portrays the harrowing reality of mentally ill patients in a Taiwanese institution, where they are physically tethered together. His project Jet Lag examines the isolation experienced by migrant workers. Another significant body of work, China Town, explores the lives of Chinese immigrants in New York, capturing their struggles with cultural displacement and economic hardship. His photography is characterized by stark, intimate compositions that reveal the emotional and psychological complexities of his subjects. Through his lens, Chang captures the tensions between tradition and modernity, individual identity, and collective experience, making him a significant voice in contemporary visual storytelling.
