Although I have experienced a financial bubble before, such as the dotcom and tech stock crashes, the credit crisis shook capitalism to its core and the media were projecting a shell-shocked voice, asking if the apparent corrupted system could carry on. I wanted to search for the roots (no pun intended), for a way to understand; it led me to explore the first financial bubble in recorded history, which was Tulipmania.” “To me, it is a surreal metaphor of the madness of crowds, to spend the price of a house on a tulip bulb. Despite believing ourselves to be rational and part of what we call an advanced civilisation, the same human feral impulses of greed that take hold of the minds of many are lessons we have yet to learn despite all the bubbles that have come and gone since almost 400 years ago.” About Gordon Cheung Born 1975 in London, contemporary multi-media artist Gordon Cheung has developed an innovative approach to making art, which blurs virtual and actual reality to reflect on the existential questions of what it means to be human in civilisations with histories written by victors. Cheung raises questions and critique’s the effects of global capitalism, its underlying mechanisms of power on our perception of identity, territory and sense of belonging. Cheung graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting in 1998 from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London and earned his Masters of Fine Arts in 2001 from the Royal College of Art in London.
