Herbert List "Young man under pine trees" Estate-Stamped Framed Print, 1936

About the Item

For sale an original Estate-Stamped, museum-quality Magnum photographic print by renowned German photographer Herbert List. Titled 'Young man under pine trees. Italy, 1936', the print is a time-limited Open Edition that was only available to purchase for a period of five days. The work is stamped by the artist's estate (verso) on an affixed archival label that carries the image’s accompanying text. It is mounted and presented in an elegant dark grey oak-wood veneered aluminium frame. The accompanying text reads: “The image suggests paradise — a young man lying in the grass under some pine trees, sunlight caressing his skin. His peaceful and carefree state stands in stark contrast with what had happened prior that year: growing antisemitism, racism and homophobia made Herbert List abort his career in Germany and seek refuge in the Mediterranean. “While in exile, he continued working on his largest and most elusive body of work — images of young men. But it’s not just the homoerotic content that’s at odds with the culture of his time. List is fascinated by moments of transition and ambiguity, which he discovers in the passage of adolescence. Here the body is no longer that of a child but not quite that of an adult either; its expression not distinctly male nor female. “List’s camera not only sees such indecisiveness but pronounces it. By capturing male bodies in passive poses of surrender — like the man under the pine trees — List suggests a fluidity of gender. With reference to the contemporary canon of male imagery favoring virile, heroic athletes and warriors, List’s style is a political statement.” © Estate of Herbert List / Magnum Photos About the Artist: Herbert List (German, 1903–1975) first pursued photography as a hobby, but his talent led him to become the preeminent photographer of the Fotografia Metafísica style and brought him considerable commercial success. As a student in Heidelberg, List apprenticed for a coffee dealer and began taking photographs while travelling on business. Increasingly enmeshed in the European avant-garde of the 1930s, he began to develop his own style of still life and portrait photography. His fascination with Surrealism and the Bauhaus influenced his aesthetic —as did later encounters with the work of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Italian Neorealist film —and his images have been compared to the paintings of Max Ernst and Giorgio de Chirico. List’s photos of Grecian architecture and landscapes earned him his first solo show in Paris in 1937, and commissions from Life and Harper’s Bazaar soon followed —as did an offer to contribute to the photo agency Magnum.
