Hyperrealistic painting, oil on canvas, by Stefania Fersini (Issue No. 137)
About the Item
Through human-scale reproduction of fashion magazine pages, the artist draws attention to the disturbing representation of women promoted by the mass media. The slow and meditative execution process inherent in the very technique of these works is opposed to the neurotic and bulimic visual consumption of an ephemeral beauty, which-deprived of all individuality and complexity, and reduced to a mere template for commercial content-quickly creases.
The choice to represent torn and creased pages is the symbolic medium through which the
artist's critique of the rapid obsolescence of images.
His hyperrealistic technique reproduces with maniacal precision the same folds and shadows of the crumpled page, details that transfigure the bodies and faces portrayed. In this operation the models, already transfigurations of an aesthetic ideal, are further transformed, becoming copies of copies, appearances of appearances.
The reflections and luster of the paper, which emphasize the patina effect with particular realism, highlight the issue of surface both in the material sense and in the metaphorical meaning of appearance, the dominant value of our time. These are not mere visual devices or virtuosities, but symbols of reflection itself, highlighting the artist's consideration of the nature of seeing and being seen, of the intersections between reality and representation.

Oil Painting on Canvas by Yang Qian
Located in Atlanta, GA
Title: Hiding in The Jungle
Artist: Yang Qian (Chinese; B. 1959)
Medium: Oil on canvas
Years: purchased circa 1990
A Palm Beach, FL collection
An early work by Yang Qian during his sojourn in Florida, USA. The series delved into art history with reinterpretation and overlaying symbolism. The painting is set in a moody tropical jungle at night and is a clear reinterpretation and a dialogue between Henri Rousseau's The Dream and Paul Gauguin's La Femme du Roi. Although the two French artists were contemporaries, they may have not intersected in their personal lives. Pioneering and ground-breaking for their time, their work were celebrated posthumously and served as inspiration for later artists.

About the artist:
Born: 1924 - New York City
Died: 1988 - Sitges, Spain
Known for: Abstract and representational urban view painting, wallpaper design
He was a very talented painter and writer in Europe and the United States. Mitchell exhibited at such famous galleries as the Hanover Gallery in London and the Carstairs Gallery in New York City. For many years he supplemented his income as a painter by creating textile and wallpaper designs.
Mitchell's early years were spent in the company of the fashionable and famous surrounding his beautiful playwright mother, who was twice married to the great impressario Leon Leonidoff, Senior Producer of the Radio City Music Hall. His travels with them and his associations at an early age with a theatrical and literary crowd gave him a taste for the exotic.
He died suddenly in Sitges, a small town south of Barcelona, in 1988.
