About the Item

Did not have a formal artistic preparation, only with various courses, among which is the Allende Institute in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato; a place where she initially worked as a secretary to pay for her studies. In In her painting she claimed that her first influence was James Pinto and the Swiss nationalized Mexican Roger von Gunten, whom she met in 1959 at the home of the sculptor Lothar Kestenbaum. With her she would have a close personal and artistic relationship. From then on, Von Gunten would travel by motorcycle from Mexico City, to visit her every weekend. In the early sixties they went to live together in a house on Pila Seca street in San Miguel de Allende, which had previously belonged to the painter Charlie Blum. Although she confesses that she learned a lot by watching him paint, yet she never considered him her teacher. They shared painting, chess, and classical music. With the Canadian painter Leonard Brooks they formed a musical trio: Leonard on the violin, Roger on the transverse flute and Joy on the baroque flute and cello, as well as other musicians and artists visiting San Miguel. Roger was beginning to stand out as a painter and San Miguel de Allende was little for him, returning to Mexico City. He did the illustrations for the covers of Jorge Ibargüengoitia's books. He had solo exhibitions in New York, Dallas, Washington D. C., Toronto, Paris, Barcelona and London. Along with Rufino Tamayo, José Luis Cuevas, Pedro Coronel and Francisco Toledo, she is considered part of the group called the Generation of Rupture, although she did not identify herself as such.3 Some of her works are in the Dallas Museum of Art , National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington DC, in the Esso Oil of Canada, in the National Bank of Mexico, in the National Bank of Commerce, in the Museum of Modern Art, in the Museum José Luis Cuevas and in the Museum of the Archdiocese of the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit. One of her last exhibitions, with the same name, was held at the Jardín Borda Cultural Center in 2017. In it she showed 130 works, including paintings, engravings, ceramics and sculpture.
