Ben Shahn, for the Sake of a Single Verse, Signed Original Lithograph
Located in Fort Lauderdale, FL
This original is from portfolio number: 711
Ben Shahn (1898 - 1969) was one of the most skilled and creative lithographers America has ever known. From easel painting to massive murals, from original lithography to calligraphy, there is no facet of modern art in which Shahn has not been monumentally successful.
Born in Lithuania in 1898, he and his family moved to Brooklyn, New York, when he was eight. He worked as a professional lithographer while attending high school, New York University, the City College of New York, and the Art Students League. In 1925, and again from 1927 to 1929, the traveled in Europe and North Africa.
Shahn’s first one-man show, mainly on African subjects, was help in New York in 1930. His superb series od 23 gouaches, The Passion of Sacco and Vanzetti, was exhibited for two years at the Downtown Gallery in New York City. This series is now in the permanent collection of the Whitney Museum of Art.
His works have been exhibited at many museums and galleries in the United States and Europe. Important one-man retrospectives were presented at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1947 and at Amsterdam in 1961. The works of Shahn and Willem de Kooning alone were chosen to represent contemporary American art in 1954 Venice Biennale. In June of 1973, Pop Paul VI opened a select Museum of Modern Art in Vatican City. Alon with Picasso, Dali and Rouault, Ben Shahn’s work is proudly displayed. His death in 1969 left a major void in the art world - but his work shall live forever.
