About the Item

Aquatint etching. Artist's proof, numbered 4/10 and signed in pencil by the artist, titled "Illumination." Plate size: 37 x 45 cm Beautiful traditional frame: frame size: 53.5 x 60.5 cm René Carcan is a Belgian engraver and watercolorist. He originally trained in sculpture at the Academy of Saint-Josse-Ten-Noode with Gustave Jacobs, then, from 1941 to 1946, in painting at the Academy of Brussels with Jacques Maes and Léon Devos. He began exhibiting his drawings in Brussels in 1952. Having received a UNESCO scholarship, he traveled to Italy, fascinated and captivated by the world of the Etruscans, from Florence to Rome. From 1960 to 1965, he attended Johnny Friedländer's Parisian studio, where he was introduced to color etching techniques. In 1963, he was a founding member of the Cap d'Encre group, alongside seasoned engravers such as Pierre Alechinsky, Gabriel Belgeonne, Francis De Bolle, Lismonde, Marc Laffineur, and Gustave Marchoul. Cap d'Encre produced five portfolios until 1970. Also during this period, his reputation as an etcher had already spread far beyond our borders, with exhibitions in Paris, the United States, Tokyo, Ljubljana, and Krakow. The 1970s were among the most prolific of his career, with his prints continually exhibiting throughout the world: the United States, Canada, Australia, South Korea, Germany, Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands, Italy, France, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. In the early 1980s, he literally conquered West Germany, exhibiting successfully and repeatedly in around twenty major cities.

Robert Kelly Kalasa V Signed Modern Abstract Aquatint Etching 5/50 Framed, 1985
By Robert Kelly
Located in Keego Harbor, MI
A bold and graphic modern aquatint etching in colors titled "Kalasa V" by Robert Kelly. Hand signed in pencil on the bottom right with an annotation of 5/50 on the bottom left. Published in 1985. Kelly's work intricately combines influences of the Bauhaus from Van Doesburg to Mondrian, with those of Schwitters and Klee, Kelly weds hints of the historical with the contemporary. His play of edges, angles, and cuts creates a tension and an intuitive logic to the placement of line and form. Kelly's work investigates the idea of doubleness through images that reflect, oppose, or mimic each other. Dimensions: 32"w x 1.5"d x 37"h (framed). In very good vintage condition. Robert Kelly (1956- ) paintings have been acquired by public and private collections in Europe and the United States, including The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Brooklyn Museum, New Mexico Museum of Art, Milwaukee Art Museum, Smith College Art Museum, Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum, Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, The Fogg Museum, The Margulies Collection, and the McNay Art Museum. Kelly has traveled throughout the United States, Europe, North Africa, the Near East, and Nepal. His work often incorporates unusual materials from his journeys, among them vintage posters and printed antique...
