Signed & Framed Original Elliot Erwitt Magnum Print, 2000
About the Item
For sale is an original signed museum-quality Magnum photographic print by world-renowned French-born American photographer ELLIOT ERWITT (1928-2023).
Titled "New York City, USA. 2000", this Magnum print is a time-limited, hand-signed edition that was only available to purchase for a period of five days.
The work is signed to the back on an affixed archival label, which carries the image’s accompanying text and is printed on Fuji Crystal Archive Matte paper. The photograph is mounted and presented in an elegant dark grey oak-wood veneered aluminium frame. Please note that the print would have been one of the last prints to be signed by the artist, dating from 2019 when Erwitt was aged 91, which also explains the shaky nature of the signature.
The accompanying text by the artist reads:
"I am obsessed with dogs—because they remind me of people but with more hair."
About the Artist:
Elliott Erwitt (born July 26, 1928, Paris, France—died November 29, 2023, Manhattan, New York, U.S.) was a French-born American photographer and filmmaker known for his uncanny ability to capture the humour and irony of everyday life. “You just have to care about what's around you and have a concern with humanity and the human comedy,” Elliott Erwitt once said. His early interest in photography began while he was in Hollywood and matured in the 1950s while photographing various subjects for the Army Signal Corps in Germany and France. Friends with Edward Steichen, Robert Capa, and Roy Stryker, he shot everything from powerful images of Pittsburgh and the U.S.S.R. to iconic portraits of John F. Kennedy, Simone de Beauvoir, and Che Guevara. Erwitt served as Magnum's president for three years. (Artsy)
