About the Item

16th Century Annunciation High relief in carved, lacquered and gilded wood, measures height. 77 cm, width. 50 cm The high-relief table, in carved, lacquered and gilded wood, depicts the Annunciation taken from sixteenth-century models. The shrill and energetic composition, probably part of a large retable, collects the sixteenth-century stylistic instances typical of that Spanish production linked to the Valladolid school, influenced by syncretic compositional canons of models from other artistic areas such as northern Italy. The "narrow" shape with the limbs adhering to the body to fit into the compositional architecture, the way of resolving the anatomical details such as the elongated eyes using painting, recall the ways of the Romanesque figurative dictation, tempered by the softness that was reached in a later age , with the pictorial models of the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries. The selected episode depicts the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary, a theme of great and intimate depth, as well as particularly dear to private devotion. From an iconographic point of view, the book of the Holy Scriptures indicates that Mary is the woman of whom the prophet Isaiah had said: "the Virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, whom she will call Emmanuel" (Is 7:14). The only of the canonical Gospels to narrate the episode of the Annunciation is that of Luke (Lk 1: 26-38), in a very high page full of poetry. A hub of Christian history, over time the scene has lent itself to various interpretations and artistic reworkings. The sensitivity of painters and sculptors was able to grasp from time to time the psychological reactions of Mary, the fascinating nature of the angel and the will of God. In the relief analyzed the religious event completely dominates the composition. The sacred subject, rendered with immediacy, portrays the moment in which Mary receives the announcement that she will become the Mother of God. The sculptor working here renders through the gestures of the Virgin her movement of amazement and disturbance in front of the words of the Archangel Gabriel " Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you ”. The angel holds a lily in his hand, a symbol of Mary's eternal virginity and is about to pronounce the announcement "Do not be afraid, Mary, because you have found favor with God. Here you will conceive a son, you will give birth to him and you will call him Jesus. ". Floating draperies envelop the figures as they both bow before the manifestation of each other's divinity. Here is how this attention to detail, both artistic and doctrinal, causes this moving biblical passage to be represented in an excellent way in this relief.
