About the Item
Antique framed British (or French?) painting of Mary, Queen of Scots (1542 -1587 AD ).
Wearing Crown and purpur Mantle, holding a Scepter.Unsigned.Presumably dates to late 1600 - early 1700 .Original canvas was professionally relined in the past.
Size: painting measures 73 cm x 58 cm unframed.
Framed : 78 cm x 63 cm / the frame can be of later period.
It came with Receipt and Visit card confirming that it was purchased at " L.Cox ", shop of antiques at 207 king's road in Chelsia / SW3 /tel : FLA9000/6198 for 15 £ , in Juny of 1958.
Text: " Portrait of a lady, 17 cent. Bought from Cobham Collection Rochester, Kent from the collection of the Earl of Darnley, July 1957 "
(note: from wiki's article on the subject of " Earl of Darnley "I figured out that that man was likely a 10th Earl of Darnley, further searching gave the name of Peter Stuart Bligh (1936 -1980). Thus likely it was him who sold the painting to the shop in 1957)
Bellow on the same piece of receipt there are footnotes of the buyer in Swedish : " From words of Carlo Deckert from National Museum (Swedish) it's likely a portrait of Mary Stuart painted after someone's order in the end of 1600s - early 1700s (Baroque clothing ) "
Condition as on the images : Original canvas was professionally relined in the past . Natural craquler / minor loss of paint, repairs. Her throat was stubbed and cut once upon a time / that area was repaired. Apparently very fine pro.repair, no holes or loose craquler, all damaged areas filled, sealed and retouched.Well done stretching.
Note, there will be no shipping insurance / guarantee for this Gilt Frame - it's old and may bee fragile /easy to loose fragments.
