19th Century Chinese Calligraphy Signboard

About the Item

A Chinese Qing Dynasty period linden wood signboard with calligraphy with stunning age-related patina. The wood carved signboard showcases a pair of couple written by a younger junior to a senior lady, called Mrs. Chiang. The couplet translates into something like, she witnessed 5 generations of great tradition and 4 families of important people. The panel frame shows traces of its original lacquer decorations. Fitted with two two fine characteristic Chinese metal buckleson allowing it to be hung on a wall. China 19th century. Calligraphy, literally "beautiful writing," has been appreciated as an art form in many different cultures throughout the world, but the stature of calligraphy in Chinese culture is unmatched. In China calligraphy was considered not just a form of decorative art; rather, it was viewed as the supreme visual art form, was more valued than painting and sculpture, and ranked alongside poetry as a means of self-expression and cultivation.
